“Beautiful You” Music Video Shoot

When my friend Audrey Bandley – who happens to be an incredibly talented singer/songwriter – saw our beYOUtiful campaign, she was inspired with an idea that she approached me about. She said, “Cristi, I keep thinking that your beYOUtiful campaign needs a song.” I gulped and said, “Um, do you want to write one?!” (I couldn’t believe I was asking her to do it. I couldn’t believe this campaign had turned into something so amazingly big and beautiful and so – way – beyond me or Jessi or Hiya Papaya.)

Unfortunately, because of a few crazy months that I have had (health-wise) I haven’t been able to be as “present” in the process with Audrey as I would have liked to have been. And yet she has not only followed through with her prompting to write a song, she took it two steps further. She got the song produced, professionally recorded in studio and … wait for it … she just released a MUSIC VIDEO for the song, which is titled “Beautiful You.”

The story of how it all came to be is amazing. Audrey is a HUGE example to me. I don’t know if I’ve ever met someone who pushes and works as hard as Audrey does. Have you heard the quote by Gordon B. Hinckley that says, “Get on your knees and pray and then get on your feet and work?” That describes Audrey to a T. She doesn’t just hope for things to happen in her life. She WORKS for those things to happen. And she works hard. And because of that, she has been blessed. And she has blessed the lives of now thousands of people through her music and her gifts and talents – and her hard work, dedication and sheer determination.

Audrey collaborated with another amazing vocalist on the project (who also happens to be a friend of mine) – Jen Marco. When the two came together, magic happened.

She wanted Hiya Papaya to be involved in the music video since the song was inspired by our beYOUtiful campaign, after all. I was unable to make it since I was on crutches at the time of filming and still not “okayed” by my doctor to photograph. But Jessi made it down to Mona and you can see glimpses of her in the video. (I can’t WAIT to post a link of the finished product for you guys to watch!! You’re going to LOVE it!!)

The set was SO fun. Very eclectic and whimsical. (You can see our photographs scattered around set, too. So fun! Past clients, look for yourselves in this post and in the music video!) The best part about it is that it was set up in a real, dirty, working barn. That’s right – they did the music video shoot in one room with cows and chickens roaming around in the other! You can read all about it on Audrey’s blog: audreybandley.blogspot.com

I was still able to be involved in the project as Audrey ran ideas by me along the way. (THANK YOU, Audrey!) And even though Jessi took the pictures and was in the actual video, I was able to edit them all here for the blog post. So I’m grateful for the small part I played.

As I looked through the pictures again tonight and as I watched the video (which I will post a link to after this), I couldn’t help but get teary-eyed as I watched this labor of love come to life. I realized all the good that has come from a single prompting that came to me one night that all women deserve to feel beautiful – because every woman is beautiful. And the beYOUtiful campaign was born.

Lesson learned from that experience of mine and from Audrey’s writing of “Beautiful You” – follow through with your promptings and act on them. Because you never know how far reaching it can be and how many lives you may end up blessing along the way.

Mercy River Guest Post and Giveaway

You guys are going to be SO EXCITED about today’s post!

1) It’s a break from the normal “photography monotony” you get here on our regular blog

2) You get to hear from someone OTHER than Jessi and/or I (me? – see, there’s that lack of grammar talent as I referred to in my last post)

3) We’ve already talked here and here about Mercy River and how much we love them so we are STOKED (and honored!) that they are doing a guest post on our blog

and…

4) There is a GIVEAWAY involved!!! (Need we say more?!)

Mercy River has been doing a blog tour the entire month. We could ask them any question we wanted. (You’ll have to go and read their interviews on the other blogs. I gained some fantastic insights and ideas – especially on finding balance in life and practical and useful ideas on being a better wife and mother.) But I took it in a little different direction than what other bloggers had been asking. Since Jessi and I have been focused on our beYOUtiful campaign, I simply asked Whitney, “What makes you feel beautiful?”

I could actually write an entire NOVEL on why I love Mercy River. And on why I love Whitney in particular (the brunette from the group, who happens to be one of my closest and dearest personal friends). But I will let Whitney’s guest post do the talking. It speaks for itself. Volumes.

BeYOUtiful: Finding the Lost Little Girl and Embracing the Champion
By Whitney Permann

I was a fantastic little girl. I read voraciously–especially Nancy Drew detective mysteries. I played in the mud and climbed trees with my brother. I wrote boxes of stories and composed music at the piano. I rode 4-wheelers and made secret hideouts. I liked myself. I was confident, kind, and funny.

And then I hit Jr. High. I remember VIVIDLY walking into the doors my first day of Jr. High and realizing–in a panic–that I had bought all the wrong clothes. I have never had a natural sense of “style,” and the first time I recognized it as a social problem–the first time I recognized it AT ALL–was in Jr. High. I became self-conscious. I stopped reading fiction and started reading beauty magazines. I stopped playing outside and started talking on the phone. I fumbled to put on makeup and dress “right.”

At the end of that year I tried out for cheerleader, because that’s what all my friends were doing. I made it, and the VERY next weekend I was invited to a party thrown by the most popular girl in the school. This girl had never even glanced my way before I “was” a cheerleader. I remember noticing the irony in this–the loud hypocrisy of it all–but the attention felt nice.

After this my best friend from elementary school and I drifted apart. I put on a cheer uniform and started hanging out with girls who were obsessed with makeup, clothes, and boys. My best friend put on black clothing and started hanging out with girls who did drugs.

The little girls we both used to be–our confident, bright, imaginative selves–had been lost.

Isn’t it obvious? Satan knows what he’s doing. If he can get a girl to abandon her vibrant childhood self (who she truly is) and tempt her to be something she’s not, that girl will become unsure, withdrawn, self-critical, and obsessed with her status and body. That girl then grows to be a woman, who continues to struggle with self-worth and cultural stereotypes as an adult. And what does this do to HER daughter?

Thank heavens–thank HEAVENS–that Satan isn’t the only one in this fight. James E. Talmage said, “The world’s greatest champion of woman and womanhood is Jesus the Christ.” (Possibly one of my favorite quotes EVER.)

He knows who we really are. He knows what we are capable of. And He knows how to help. His gospel offers perfect protection against Satan’s deceptions. Our Greatest Champion stands ready to pull us out of this worldly mess, and to show us what magnificent we are in His eyes. When we follow and trust Him, we gain a radiance that literally shines in our countenances.

The other night at bedtime I asked my seven year old son what he liked about me. His response? “You’re p-r-e-t-y.” (Gotta love first grade spelling.) “And you’re n-i-s-e. And, you’re s-m-r-a-t.” All at once, I saw myself through his point if view–pretty, nice, and smart. And there, in my sweats, with a disheveled pony tail and bags under my eyes, I felt truly beautiful.

I realized something that night–I realized I feel the most beautiful when I am feminine. And I don’t mean feminine as in wearing frilly dresses and high heels and lipstick. I mean feminine as in being nurturing and kind. As in…using my femininity the way God intended it to be used. Not to attract or impress, but to nurture, care for, and lift others. To be kind and gentle and good and chaste.

Margaret D. Nadauld said, “Women of God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. There are enough women who are rude; we need women who are refined. We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith. We have enough greed; we need more goodness. We have enough vanity; we need more virtue. We have enough popularity; we need more purity.”

When I use my divine feminine gifts in these ways, I can’t help it. I feel lovely.

I’m happy to report that now, as a grown woman, I have reconnected to my little-girl-self. Music never left me (perhaps that was the grounding tie), but I am now back to reading like crazy, playing in the mountains, and liking myself. I have also learned to trust that I am beautiful to the Lord–and following His plan and being a “feminine” woman of God makes me radiant.

What about you? Have you found her yet? That little girl you used to be? Connect with her and embrace your TRUE self! Then, allow the Savior to lift you out of Satan’s webs. Loving the real YOU, embracing your divine femininity, and striving daily to become more like the Savior, will bring you deep happiness.

And that is truly beautiful.

Mercy River

This was one of our favorite photo shoots ever. EVER! Shooting behind the scenes of a music video? Yes, please! Shooting behind the scenes of a music video of three super-fun, super-star girls that already happen to be our friends? Yes, double please!!

Mercy River and Hiya Papaya go way back. Waaaaay back. Before Mercy River was Mercy River, Whitney, Brooke and Soni (the girls who comprise Mercy River – let’s see how many times we can fit the words Mercy River into this one blog post … so far I count five …) sang in the Jenny Phillips Choir together. Cristi (yes, yours truly) also sang with Jenny Phillips (and still does). The four girls got to know each other, tour with each other, sing with each other and become good friends. A few years ago, Jenny decided to put together an all-girl group and Brooke, Soni and Whitney were natural choices with their amazing voices and smooth harmonies. They have since gone on to be mega superstars for Deseret Book’s music label Shadow Mountain Records. I sure LOVE my AMAZING Mercy River friends! And so does Jessi, of course, who has always been a loyal Jenny Phillips and Mercy River “groupie.” (She’s a good supporter, that Jess!)

Mercy River has just released their third studio album, titled “Higher.” (It is PHENOMENAL, by the way. I’m not kidding. I’m not saying it just because they’re our friends. I’m a pretty “harsh critic” when it comes to music. And this, folks, is the REAL DEAL!!) The album was released on February 29th. And to mark the release, they recorded their FIRST EVER MUSIC VIDEO! Yes – a MUSIC VIDEO! Isn’t that SO EXCITING?!! (We can’t wait until the video is finished. We will post a link here on our site when it is!) How fun to get all dolled up with hair and makeup (courtesy of another fun gal we got to meet – Laurie of Natures Knockout) and just sing your hearts out all day long! (And if you’re Jessi and I – DANCE – cheesily – while the girls sing – all day long.)

What was even MORE exciting (for us) was when Mercy River (so far that’s a running total of nine times) asked Jessi and I to shoot behind-the-scenes photos on set. It was kind of funny and even “cryptic” how it worked out. We didn’t know the time or location until the day before. And even then, we were told not to give out the address to anyone. Doesn’t that make it all the more exciting?! It was shot at an old Del Monte plant. An OLD Del Monte plant. Did I mention the building was old? We hiked up three flights of r-i-c-k-e-t-y stairs (I seriously thought I was going to die – my fear of heights and rickety stairs combined), dodged bird poop all over the floor and awakened hibernating nests of wasps with our space heaters (you guys – WASPS just kept FALLING from the CEILING. Pretty much my biggest fear, coming to life! WASPS! FALLING! From the CEILING!). But it was fantastically hip and oh-so-worth-it!

Check out Mercy River’s Website: http://www.mercyrivermusic.com And check out the links above by clicking on what’s highlighted. Make sure and check out their new album! We promise (omise!) you won’t be disappointed!! It is as stunning as these three are beautiful.

And now, enjoy behind-the-scenes photos on set of Mercy River’s music video “Beautiful Life.”
